Health Benefits of Eating Seafood

Seafood is a rich source of nutrients that are good for your health. Fish and shellfish contain high-quality protein, omega-3 fatty acids (which can help lower your risk of heart disease), vitamins, and minerals, and they are low in fat. Eating seafood regularly can help maintain good health.

Here are some health benefits of eating seafood:

  • Heart Health – Omega-3 fatty acids are important for maintaining good health, especially heart health. They reduce triglycerides and LDL cholesterol levels while increasing HDL cholesterol levels (1). The American Heart Association recommends an intake of 250-500 mg/day of EPA/DHA combined for the reduction of cardiovascular disease (2). The recommended daily intake varies between countries but most suggest a minimum of 2 servings of fatty fish per week.
  • Brain Health –A diet high in foods containing omega-3 fatty acids has been linked to better brain development in infants and children, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The AAP recommends that pregnant women eat at least eight ounces of fish each week because it may reduce the risk of preterm delivery among other benefits for the unborn baby.
  • Immune System Support – Selenium found in some types of seafood can help fight infections by boosting immune function. This mineral has also been shown to help prevent cancer.
  • Source of Calcium –Some types of seafood are rich in calcium, which can contribute to stronger bones when eaten regularly. They’re also a good source of phosphorus, copper, and iodine — nutrients that help keep your thyroid functioning properly.

The most common types of seafood are:

Tuna, salmon, trout, mackerel, herring, and sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids. Shellfish include shrimp, crab, lobster, oysters, mussels and clams. These healthy fats have been linked to improved heart health, lower blood pressure, and reduced risk of stroke.
